The Pellas Story

For the love of family.

In 1875, 25-year old Francisco Alfredo Pellas Canessa came to Nicaragua to take over the family business, Caribbean Pacific Transit Co., founded by his father Carlos Napoleon. More than 135 years later and through five generations, the family business has grown into 16 companies in more than a dozen countries – from transportation and computers to sugar, ethanol, Flor de Caña Rum and the world-class Vivian Pellas Hospital.

Now led by Don Carlos Pellas, named by America Economia as one of the 50 most influential persons in Latin America, has committed himself to creating one of the most exclusive boutique resorts in the world. With it, Pellas is establishing his family legacy – a pristine natural sanctuary where you make authentic connections to the land, culture and people of Nicaragua. And in return, the surrounding community will benefit from the resulting improved quality of life.

Family Story

Carlos Pellas’ vision for Mukul is a testament to love of family and a rich, 135-year history rooted in Nicaragua. Back in 1875, then 25-year-old Francisco Alfredo Pellas Canessa first arrived to run the family business, Caribbean Pacific Transit Co. That original enterprise has since blossomed into 16 companies in more than a dozen countries, now employing more than 18,000 people.

Today, Don Carlos Pellas survives as the patriarch of Mukul and the standard bearer of the Pellas vision. Named as one of the 50 most influential people in Latin America, Don Carlos also oversees the world-class Vivian Pellas Hospital and the award-winning Flor de Caña rum distillery – which has won more than 130 awards at prestigious international tasting competitions.

Mukul now stands as the crown jewel of the Pellas family legacy. It’s a place where the love of togetherness, family and this special land is shared with new friends from around the world. Friends like you.

Flor de Caña

From humble roots dating back to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, Flor de Caña has grown to be Central America's leading rum. And the traditions and heritage of the rum’s makers have remained unchanged throughout the centuries. Today, the fifth generation of the Pellas family continues to guide the Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua with a commitment to expert craftsmanship, the finest natural ingredients, and the unique slow-aging process which sets Flor de Caña rums apart from any other.

Not surprisingly, the flavor of Flor de Caña rum can be found warmly spicing up your stays at Mukul. Guests are welcomed with a limited edition bottle (exclusive to Mukul), and private tours of the distillery are available upon request.

Six years of environmental studies and conservation programs were completed before breaking ground on Mukul. The goal – which has been proudly achieved – was a complete integration of the resort with its surrounding environment and communities. And day-in, day-out, Mukul’s founders and staff work tirelessly to celebrate and conserve natural resources. By designing projects around existing landscapes – the golf course, as the perfect example – healthy, sustained lands become emerald treasures for the world to admire.

Additionally, one of the most remarkable environmental initiatives undertaken at Mukul involves a partnership with farmers to protect the water sources of local residents. Small farmers are given financial incentives to leave trees standing, to reforest barren areas, and to implement water catchment strategies in order to more effectively retain water. The results have been highly refreshing – just like a visit to this naturally perfect resort.

Our Social Responsibility

Taken to heart, the responsibilities of Mukul include operating with the values and principles of respect, the ethical treatment of employees, participation in the community, and stewardship of the environment.Upon acquisition of the resort property, the Pellas family immediately set out with the assistance of their committed, creative staff to identify the needs and strengths of the surrounding communities. We value our community involvement and welcome guests to get involved. Please consider leaving a contribution at checkout.
